History of Calvert School in Tuscany-Canterbury

Calvert School, founded in 1897, is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational lower and middle school located in Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood of Baltimore City in 1924.

Calvert Lower School 1924

1887: Calvert School started when a German kindergarten teacher taught four children in the Dixon home on Park Avenue. 

1897: Boys’ and Girls’ Primary School is inaugurated with fifteen children.

1899: School name formally changed to “Calvert Primary School of Baltimore City”.

1918: School outgrew the building on Chase Street and purchased four lots on 40th Street.
1924: Laurence Hall Fowler designs the new school building.
1927: Calvert School convinces the City to change the street name 40th Street to Tuscany Road.
1929: Castalia was built for the headmaster, Virgil Hillyer.
1978: School added a library, science, and art classrooms. 1987: Luetkemeyer Wing opens with planetarium.
2002: Expansion for a middle school campus, 7th and 8th grades were added to the school.
2008: Expansion included additional space for classroom, offices, or conference rooms.
2018: Expanded the middle school athletic center and moved the playing field.
2021: Kitty Calvert was added as an annex at Cross Key as an Early Learning Center

2000 Calvert School Board approves expansion from 6th grade to 8th grade.

 

Calvert Purchases Land for School

2026: 4220 N Charles Street to be use as office space for the school
2018: 200 Tuscany Road / 33 Warrington Road 2.7 acres of land for athletic building with squash courts
2008: Canterbury Road, for additional space for lower school building
2008: 200 Tuscany Road, for headmaster’s home
2002: 4300 Oak Place Apartments for a middle school campus
1974: Fraternity house, corner of Tuscany Road & Canterbury Road, to expand the lower school building
1918: Lots purchased for Calvert School in Tuscany-Canterbury.
