Ridgemede Apartments (1940), Conversion to Condos (1991)
The last apartment building built before World War II in Tuscany-Canterbury was the Ridgemede, another product of the Mullan Construction Company. The Tudor style matches the attractive homes on Ridgemede and Tuscany Roads. It includes the leaded glass windows similar to the homes in the area.
The building is long and low and follows the slope of the hill down toward Linkwood. The hillside was a challenge: it was solved by constructing a building where you enter on the third floor, and either go up two flights or down two flights.
In 1940 porches and balconies were included on the west side of the building that overlooks the Stony Run.The building was placed to provide space for trees and a gardens all around the building.
The garage was built into the hill on the Ridgemede Alley. A garden extends from the back of the building to the roof of the building’s garage. The large stone wall supports the steep incline on the Ridgemede Alley facing Linkwood Road.
Attractive grasses and flowers are planted and maintained along the lower section of the alley.
